Canaan Smith Celebrates 1st #1

CanaanSmith#1 9-15-15It took a year and two weeks for “Love You Like That” by Canaan Smith to hit the top of the charts.  When it did, it was a victory for a lot of people, including the 33 year old singer.  They all came together at the Cabana in Nashville Tuesday night to celebrate.  The record label, the songwriters, the publishers, the producer, and the media.  Before the party, Canaan spoke with the media:

How does it feel to have a #1 song?  “It feels like everybody at radio is fully on board now.  My fans always has been, but it makes a difference because you prove yourself, and the label sticking with the single proves that they’re behind it, radio sees that, and it all adds up to success.  It’s a great feeling.”

How do you celebrate? “We’re going to get drunk tonight, and then take a vacation with my wife.  That would be awesome.  It’s teamwork, I’m gone a lot, and she’s a part of this too.  So I feel like we should celebrate together when we get some downtime.”

How does your hometown feel about your success? “They’re incredible, my hometown, Williamsburg VA, they’ve come on strong with support, and my family, I’m so lucky to have this support, since I was a kid they allowed me to chase my dream, it’s something we’re all celebrating, that’s for sure.”CanaanSmith 9-15-15

Compare this to Amazing Race: It’s a different world.  That was a scavenger hunt.  This is as epic as it gets.  Nothing compares.”

Talk about the night the song went #1: “I was on stage, I’d just finished the first chorus, and I noticed the audience was looking behind me, so I turned around and the whole stage was lined with Kip, Maddie & Tae, Dierks, and they were all wearing jump suits with “#1″ on it, it was just, one of those things where they didn’t have to do that, but that’s the crew they are, and that’s something I’ll take with me, because it meant so much to me.”

Talk about the line “a fishin’ in the dark nitty gritty boy:” Writer Jim Beavers said, “I’m old enough to remember Fishing In The Dark when it came out.” Canaan added, “To me, it’s a cover song that everybody knows.” “It’s a song everybody references, and that’s one of them.  Another is Redneck Girl by the Bellamy Brothers, songs that peaked before most of the audience was born.  Maybe by name-checking a song, it elicits a certain feeling, and I’m sure that’s where we were coming from.  It’s just a vibe, and a way to tell the woman you’re not a sissy.  Yeah this is a love song, but I’m a nitty gritty boy that’s gonna love you.  Pretty, city, and nitty gritty rhyme.  Never underestimate the power of a rhyme.  Also, so many people think the lyric is “I’m more efficient in the dark.”  So I got a lot of comments, ‘Tell me about that, nitty gritty boy.'”
