Aaron Watson has been making records and playing shows in his home state of Texas for over ten years. But for the first time, one of his songs is getting national airplay. That song is “Outta Style,” and this week it made it into our Top 15. We spoke with Aaron at the BMI Awards in Nashville.
We know you’re already well known in Texas, but this is your first national hit. How does it feel to be the new guy? “To be ‘up & coming’ 18 years, 13 albums, and 2500 shows is quite a compliment. I’d like to think we’re just getting started. God’s blessed us with the best fans in the world. Our recent success at country radio is very exciting. We’ve always focused on the fans. Every show, I give em all I’ve got. After the show, I hang out with them til they kick me out. I’ve been doing that for 18 years. I feel so fortunate to be here. For me, music’s not an industry, it’s a family business. It’s taken me 18 years to get here, so I’m not taking these boots off the throttle.”
Do you feel the difference of having a radio hit in your show? “I think so. We’ve had such a solid fan base. We’ve charted before without radio success. But I can feel a buzz. It seems like new people are discovering me. It took Willie Nelson til he was 45 to hit it big, so I’m ahead of the curve. Us Texas boys, we’re just a bit slower, but we’re steady.”
Aaron wrote “Outta Style,” and it’s on his latest album, Vaquero, which was released earlier this year. He’s on the road right now, playing the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas next week, and then three sold out shows at historic Gruene Hall in New Braunfells Texas December 21, 22, and 23.
