How Garth’s Daughter Saved Scotty

Scotty McCreery has been a lifelong fan of Garth Brooks.  In fact when Scotty was a contestant on American Idol in 2011, he sang “The River” during Personal Idol Week.  So when Scotty got the opportunity to open for Garth last September, he told Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton he jumped at the chance:

“That was a big career moment for me, a big bucket list item, and I’ve always been a huge fan of his.  I’ve come to get to know him over the years, and he’s always been the nicest guy. We went to South Dakota, the fans didn’t know it was me, I was nervous, and as soon as they announced it was us, the crowd went nuts, we had 25 minutes, they rocked it out with us, and it was maybe the most fun I had last year.”

Did you speak with him? “I did, and I was proposing to Gabi two days later, she was at that show, so I clued him in. His daughter August helped me out by telling me my ‘location’ was on from Snapchat as I was going to Gabi’s parent’s house to ask her father’s blessing.  If Gabi had seen it, it would have blown my whole proposal.  So Garth’s daughter saved my proposal. I’ve met August, she came to one of my shows years ago, and on Snapchat, you can go to a map and see where all your friends are. It’s kind of creepy, but it’s cool. So she just wanted to make sure I didn’t have it on because all the fans would see it.  But it was good she told me, because Gabi definitely would have seen it.”

What else did you talk to Garth about? “We chatted about life, the new record, he was telling me he loved my song, and we talked about Oklahoma State. He loves them, and I can talk sports all day long.  He so cool about making you feel at ease, because he knows he’s Garth Brooks, but he makes you feel like you’ve been buddies your whole life. It was a really special night.”
