A couple months ago, Chris Stapleton won three Grammy Awards: Best Country Album, Best Country Song, and Best Country Solo Performance. Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton asked Chris about winning Best Country Song for his current hit Broken Halos: “As a songwriter, that’s the first thing I’ve won as a songwriter. So it means a great deal, and to have this degree of an honor to happen with that song means a great deal.”
The song is Stapleton’s highest charting single as an artist. He told Lon the song’s inspiration: “It came out of Keith Richards’ biography. Maybe I owe Keith some money! Keith was discussing how he’d seen a lot of his friends pass away from drugs or various addictions, and the quote from the book was he’d seen a lot of broken halos, and that’s what we wrote the song from. It’s come to mean more things than what it was in that book, but with the tragedy in Las Vegas, I think it’s helped some folks in that way.”
While in New York for the Grammy Awards, Chris also performed on Saturday Night Live. He told Lon, “That show is always a blast to do. There’s so much history in that show, there’s a deep tradition of music on that show, so to get to be a small part of that is the coolest thing in the world to me. It’s an amazing thing to watch. Just like watching the halftime show at the Super Bowl. We got to go this year and watch them set up the whole stage in five minutes. That’s like the roadie Olympics. To do that in five minutes is unbelievable.”
Last year, Chris Stapleton took his kids to see a Sam Hunt concert. Now they’re huge Sam Hunt fans. He told Lon, “He’s heavy rotation, my children know every word to every song. There’s a picture of my daughter with her eyes as big saucers and her hands cupped together like you just gave her 18 birthday cakes, taking a picture with Sam, because she was so nervous and excited at the same time. It’s a great thing.”
Chris Stapleton and his wife Morgane are expecting twins later this year. Lon asked him when they’re due: “They’re coming in the springtime. Twins are kind of funny, a due date is not a real thing. We have to be prepared. They may come early. I guess we’re as ready as anyone who’s expecting two at one time. It was always a goal to have the family on the road. We got to that point, and we decided we’d like to have one more baby, and we got two. So we’re gonna have our hands full, that’s for sure.
Chris also has great stories this week about Thomas Rhett, Darius Rucker, Dierks Bentley, Randy Houser, and Tim McGraw.
