Luke Bryan’s Idol Update

The new edition of American Idol has been on the air for a couple weeks.  Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton asked judge Luke Bryan how it’s going: “The pressure of it all continues to amp up.  When you go from 300 contestants down to ten, we haven’t taken this responsibility lightly. It’s been emotional to make the right decisions.  But it’s been a blast. We’ve become settled into who we are as judges and friends.  Nobody’s toting a big ego around on this judging panel.”

This week’s chart features two previous Idol contestants: Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery.  Of them, Luke said, “There’s two people right there that are a direct correlation in the success of American Idol.  Some people think if you win Idol, you’ll be a star in three weeks.  But you have to earn it regardless of how you started.  Idol was able to pull Scotty & Lauren out of their small towns and now they’re big stars.”

Lon also asked him about his conversations with former judge Keith Urban.  Luke said, “We texted a couple of times, and what was defining about Keith, he told me I was going to love it, and he was so right. It is so much fun to watch these kids leave it all on the line.  Sometimes we have contestants push so hard, and we can see it, and that’s what’s inspiring.”

How about Idol’s most successful winner Carrie Underwood? Luke said, “I haven’t had a chance to speak one-on-one with Carrie about it.  But with her husband now back in the NHL, I haven’t had a chance to run into Carrie much.  But I’m always interested to hear her opinion on how I’d doing as a judge. If I’ve got the Carrie Underwood stamp of approval, that’ll be a nice feather in my cap on judging.”

Although Idol has been on the air for a few weeks, Luke hasn’t been able to watch it yet. “The interesting part of my first few weeks on Idol is I was touring in Australia.  I just got feedback from my family, they were watching, saying the show’s going great. I haven’t been able to watch it yet.”
