Kane Brown on ACM Duet

One of the most memorable performances at the 2018 ACM Awards was Kane Brown’s duet with Lauren Alaina.  Country Countdown USA’s Lon Helton spoke with Kane about it.

Tell me about the moment with the two of you, there was some real chemistry: “You mean when we were real close? It was cool. I wouldn’t have wanted to share the stage with anyone else. First of all, I’m super confident in her. I’ve grown up with her, I know how she sings, I know her personality, I knew she was gonna kill it, and I knew she was gonna bring me up a little bit. Once she came out, it was just like two kids of middle school who knew each other our whole lives up there together as a team. It was just an exciting moment, and that last moment that everybody thought we were gonna kiss, it’s like I’m engaged and she’s got a boyfriend.  It was so much easier to do that with her than a stranger.  If I was up there with Carrie Underwood, and I had to get that close to her, I’d be like ‘Ewww.’ I love Carrie, but I’m just saying I’ve known Lauren my whole life.”

So did that moment happen in rehearsal too? “Yeah, my fiancé was there too, and I warned her, ‘baby they want me to get close to her,’ so that was planned the whole time.”

Were you surprised about the reaction? “I was very surprised! I saw some crazy comments!”

That song What Ifs is now double platinum: “Yeah it’s crazy. I’m just excited. That was the first song that radio took under their wings. When it got Top 20, I started seeing a bigger reaction than I’d seen from my fans. It was like everyone’s singing it now. It was like amazing.”
