“He’s been playing since he was 12. He’s 13 now. He lives for it too. He hits balls 2-3 hours a day in our hitting room. He loves it.
He probably lives for the day he outdrives you, and the day he beats you? “Those are two things he’s waiting for. He beat me one day, he shot 82 one day and I shot 83, and that was probably the greatest day of his life. He played his butt off that day. He shot a 79 once. When it clicks for him on the course he can really hit it. But he’s got that kid mentality when every shot’s not great, he gets angry. But we’re getting over that. I told him that once, and it made him even more mad. But it was shocking to me when he started playing, and instantly had a nice swing. His short game is fearless. If I had his short game, I’d have a 2 handicap. He’s fearless. He doesn’t know how bad you can hit it.”
Darius has had a great year on the course. Earlier this year, he played the annual AT&T Pro-Am tournament at Pebble Beach, and reached a career milestone. “This year was a great year for me. I’ve played it ten times and this was the first time I made the cut. It was a special year, the weather was great, we just had a blast, it was my favorite weekend there.”
Tell me about making the cut. Things get more serious then, because the pros are playing for money. How do you act? “You definitely stay out of their way. But everyone is so gracious. My pro was reading every putt for me. They’re so gracious and they want us to have a great time. It’s one of my favorite golf things to do, because it’s fun.”
A lot of country artists play too: “Toby plays, Dierks plays, Charles Kelley, and they’ve embraced country music, and I love to see that.”
Darius Rucker hosts his own annual Darius & Friends concert and golf tournament in Nashville June 4 & 5.
