Tim McGraw co-hosts this week’s Countdown, and will introduce his first new solo single in two years.
Lon asked Tim to describe what people will hear in the new song: “The guitars on this song are killer, there’s great stuff all over it. You can listen to this record, I love the lyrics, such a great lyric, such a heavy lyric, and I think emotionally the words really move you, but musically and sonically the song really stands up and makes you want to listen to it, makes you want to hit replay. You could block the words out, nothing against the songwriters because the words are fantastic, but rarely do you find a song that’s that deep with this great power ballad guitar track on it, and they accomplished that with this lyric, and then we came in and ‘purple rained’ it up a little bit.”
In addition to the new single, you released another song, so what was the thinking behind putting out two news songs? “I wanted to do two songs that I thought were hit songs and great songs, it’s sort of an A-side/B-side thing, but I didn’t want to do one song that was definitely a single, and the other probably wouldn’t be a singe. ‘Thought About You’ the other song is definitely a home run single to me, and something I feel is a big hit record. I just want people to hear this music a couple songs as a time and not just one. I want them to hear stuff that thrilled me to the project.”
So now that we have two songs out, where are you in a whole new solo album? “We’ve got most of it done, Not much that’s not done. I’ve got my arms wrapped around it. We’ll let the singles run a little bit, give it some life and a runway. I can’t wait for people to hear it, and hear more of it.”
Tim just returned from a fun vacation: “Our tour ended at the end of July, and my wife was so gracious, since we were on tour together for two years, she said, ‘Why don’t you take a trip with some guys.’ So I took a bunch of guys and went spearfishing for eight days. We were in the water all day going down 30-40 feet getting fish. We really enjoyed ourselves.”
Earlier in the summer, I saw you & Faith went to New York to see Springsteen On Broadway: “It’s one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen. I don’t think I’ve ever been so moved by any piece of art. The combination of everything is so inspiring, you could tell he put a lot of work in it.’ Would you do something like that? “If that’s the bar, I don’t see myself doing that. He’s just so perfect at what he does. I’m such a huge fan of his.”
Tim also has great stories this week about Luke Bryan, Dierks Bentley, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Thomas Rhett, Garth Brooks, and Chris Stapleton.
