This week’s co-host Eric Church says he was a last-minute addition to the CMA Awards. How last minute? Eric tells Lon Helton it was less than 48 hours. “It was unexpected, and that made it enjoyable. You don’t have time to think about it. You just show up and play. We had fun with the performance.”
In addition, Eric typically doesn’t attend post-awards parties. But he made an exception: “I was pleasantly surprised and pleased that Keith Urban won Entertainer of the Year. It meant enough to me that I asked him where he was going, and he said he was going to the party. So I said I’ll be there. I couldn’t be more happy for him. I think he was surprised. We’ve all been there enough times to know. I know how hard he works. I think it was the right award to go to him.”
Eric’s favorite CMA performance? Chris Stapleton, Maren Morris, and Mavis Staples. “I knew when I saw the names on that one that I wasn’t missing it. I didn’t miss that performance. It was my favorite if the night.”
Eric told Lon that he’s begun work on his 2019 Double Down Tour. “We’re doing two nights in 19 cities, two different shows, 3 to 3 1/2 hours. We’re going to try and do different songs each night. I don’t want to do the same show. That’s boring. The main things is we’re going to enjoy going into these cities and take them over and make them as epic as we can.”
Lon noticed that the shows are only on weekends. Eric explained, “I have kids in school. Boone’s in school, so he’s gonna be on the road with me.”
A few weeks ago, Eric was part of a benefit in New York with Bruce Springsteen. Eric told Lon that Bruce invited Eric to join him on stage for a song: “I was in my dressing room, and Bruce calls me up, ‘Hey you wanna do Workin’ On The Highway?’ I said, Yeah. I know it. I played my set, and he was side-stage for the whole thing. I’ve done some nerve wracking things, and that was one of them. When I came out to do our song together, he said, ‘You did a real great job tonight.’ Then we sang our song together. It was a great time between two guys who’d never done that. It’s one of those on one hand of the things that I’ve done, and it’s at the top of that hand.”
Eric also has great stories this week about Luke Bryan, Kenny Chesney, Maren Morris, Luke Combs, and Dierks Bentley.
