This week’s countdown with Old Dominion was recorded in Las Vegas during ACM weekend. The band won their second straight ACM Group of the Year Award. While there, they each had some fun. Trevor did some gambling, Brad played golf. Matt had roast duck at an Asian restaurant.
But Geoff told Lon he has a rather unique custom: “I have a tradition where every time I’m in Vegas, I get a bubble bath.” Then Matt quizzed Geoff on his methods: “Here’s the thing. Where does he get the bubbles? Do you have Mr. Bubble? Walk us through. If I walked in on you, would you feel the need to cover up? Because if you do, it’s not a bubble bath,” “Alright. I’ll up my bubble bath game for you.”
Rodney Atkins has a song in the Top 30, and Matt & Geoff recalled they once made a brief appearance in one of Rodney’s videos: “He has this song called ‘It’s America,’ and they were looking for someone to play a rock band, and I was working with his manager. I even made one of the props for the video. Our whole part lasted 4 seconds. It didn’t pay a lot, but whatever it was, it was a big deal at the time.”
Drummer Whit Sellers told Lon a story about Randy Houser: “My first Nashville job was playing drums for Randy Houser. I told them when I accepted the job that I had a vacation scheduled while the band was on a run. They told me it was OK. So I go to Montana, in an area where there was bad cell service. At some point, they tried to call me to say I was fired, but they couldn’t get a hold of me. Until one day, I clim
bed up on top of a mountain, and my phone came to life. I get a bunch of messages from his tour manager, and they’re getting progressively less nice, until finally, they say, ‘We have to make a change, we gotta let you go, bye.’ I took it pretty well.”
“Make It Sweet” is the first single from the band’s third album. Lon asked if it’s done yet. Matt answered: “Just finished it. This week we got the masters back and turned it in to the label.” When will we hear it? “I’d like you to hear it now. But I can say for sure by the end of the year, we’ll have the album out.”
This week’s #1 song is “One That Got Away” by Michael Ray. The song was written by OD’s Matt & Trevor, who told Lon, “Awesome, we wrote it years ago, we almost cut it for our second album, and then gave it to Michael.” Michael & the band got together Saturday night before the awards show to celebrate the #1 song.
Old Dominion also has great stories this week about Kenny Chesney, Kelsea Ballerini, Thomas Rhett, Maren Morris, and Mitchell Tenpenny.
