Garth Brooks Dive Bar Duet

This week, Garth Brooks co-hosts the Countdown to introduce his new single, Dive Bar. He tells Lon he’s having fun right now: “I love being busy, and now the whole household is busy. It’s a fun time to be Mr. Yearwood, I can tell you that!”

Garth then gave Lon the background on Dive Bar: One of the writers called me saying, ‘I want to write about being in the deep end of a dive bar.’ I said, ‘If you ask me, I’d said I wanna spend the weekend in the deep end of a dive bar.’ So it was fun. One of the musicians said, ‘This is a real Jones meets Stones kind of thing.’ So that’s the attitude they took.”

So at what point did Blake Shelton become part of it? “What got me is I saw him on the ACMs. He was singing God’s Country. You could tell that what he was singing touched him. So I called him up, told him it was a great performance. Then I asked if he’d ever do a duet, and he said ‘Hell yeah!’ So Dive Bar was the result.”

A couple weeks ago, Garth played Mile High Stadium in Denver: “You think it can’t get better than this, and you roll into Denver, and after that, I thought, ‘If this is the last gig I ever play, I’m OK.’ That’s how good it was. It was the best night I ever had on stage. Then it hit me…what if this is just starting to wake up?’

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Class of 89: “None of us would have got our start if it wasn’t for Strait, Skaggs, and Randy Travis. I would love to take credit or say we kicked the doors open with the Class of 89. But the doors were wide open. We were lucky to be the guys who came next after those other guys did all the hard work of knockin’ those doors down.”

In addition to Garth’s new song, his wife Trisha Yearwood just released new music: “She had put together this record with ten songs that are mighty and strong without oration. She’s picked them very well. ‘Every Girl’ is the obvious first single. Can I tell you how great it is to hear that voice on country radio.”

Garth also has great stories this week about Kelsea Ballerini, Cole Swindell, Chase Rice, Jason Aldean, Keith Urban, and George Strait.

NEXT WEEK: Garth Brooks Returns to talk Dive Bar Day, his new video, his next show in Boise, and what he loves about Midland and Runaway June.
