Keith Urban co-hosts the countdown for the first of two weeks from his home studio in Nashville. “I’ve been doing huge amounts of work here these last few months, finishing up my new album. The studio is downstairs in my house, pretty good size, with windows and a lot of light. Real good creative space.”
The new album Keith mentioned is “The Speed of Now Part 1,” and it will be released on September 18. There are a few songs on it he recorded during the lockdown. “I’d do a track here, then send it to the drummer, and then finish it out here. For me there was no alternative, especially during March and April, because all the regular studios were closed. So I had to figure out a way around it.”
When he wasn’t working on the album, he was spending more time with his wife and two girls: “On one hand, I’m really grateful for the time to be at home and be healthy with a family that’s healthy. But we’re super-tight anyway. Both Nic and I grew up the same way, so we come from small families and always had dinner every night as a family. So that hasn’t changed. But it’s nice to be home for a bit.”
Keith is close friends with Eric Church. They often exchange obscure songs with each other. Lon asked about the latest: “I send him some music from James Vincent McMorrow, who’s an Irish folksinger. Eric sent me The Best of Roy Head. The song is ‘One More Time’ by Roy Head and the Saints. That’s the last song Eric sent me.”
Last December, Keith was a special guest at Luke Combs‘ Nashville concert. Keith recalls, “We were backstage and he introduces me to his wife. Nicole. I have a tattoo of the name Nicole on my arm. So I joke that we just met, and I have your name tattoo’d on my arm. She says, ‘Actually I’m named after Nicole Kidman!’ Really? I told Nic that story, and she said she’s never net anyone named after her. So there you have it!”
Keith also has great stories this week about Miranda Lambert, Kelsea Ballerini, Ashley McBryde, Thomas Rhett, and Russell Dickerson.
