Lon’s co-host this week is Luke Combs, and Lon wasted no time in asking about Luke’s wife Nicole. It had been reported that she had a bout of Covid. Luke said: “She’s good. I think what you read was a little hyperbole. I think she meant the idea of having it was brutal, because she didn’t get very sick. We’re waiting for her to test negative and move on.” Luke added he never came down with the disease himself.
Luke said he & Nicole spent the holidays at home in Nashville: “I had the family in, my parents in from North Carolina, Nicole’s parents came in from Florida. It was good to see everybody, and to spend time together as a family was nice.”
Luke married Nicole in August, and he told Lon is was a challenge given the circumstances: “We had to change venues a week before the wedding. The city put in event mandates the week before our wedding. We had already planned for it to be outside, no buffet, and none of this stuff. It was crushing for Nicole because she put work into this for a year, and then all of a sudden we get a call one week out that it all had to change.”
Not only that. They also had weather to deal with: “All of a sudden, there’s a hurricane heading our way. We didn’t know where we were going to get married on the morning of our wedding day. Luckily it ended up missing us by 60 miles. We got lucky, and ended up having it outside, and it was the perfect day. She was there, I was there, and that’s all that matters.”
Two months ago, Luke attended the CMA Awards, where he won Male Vocalist and Album of the Year: “That was a bucket-list thing for me, something I always knew we were shooting for when we were making this album.” As far as the show, “It was really cool to have people there, to have a little normalcy for a few hours. That was a fun night.”
Luke and his wife were seated at the same table with Eric Church. So when Eric won Entertainer of the Year, Luke got to experience it close-up: “Man that was fun! I think each of us snuck our own personal coolers in that night. I was super pumped that he won Entertainer. It’s something that I feel like he’s deserved countless time, so watching him win, and knowing he deserved to win it, genuinely being pumped for him was great.”
Luke also has great stories this week about Blake Shelton, Dan & Shay, Morgan Wallen, Keith Urban, and Thomas Rhett.
NEXT WEEK: Kenny Chesney
