On this day, May 30, 1992, Billy Ray Cyrus topped the country charts with his debut song “Achy Breaky Heart.” It happened over Memorial Day weekend, and Billy was in Washington DC for the annual Rolling Thunder veterans motorcycle ride. Cyrus was scheduled to perform for the veterans that night. But he’ll never forget the experience of getting that #1. Here’s how he remembers it:
“It was raining, and we were at the foot of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. By my side was Don Von Tress, the two-term Vietnam Veteran who wrote Achy Breaky Heart that changed my life, and became part of the album “Some Gave All.” As we know I wrote Some Gave All about a Vietnam veteran. So there I stood with Mr. Von Tress in the rain. Later we’d get on stage and sing Some Gave All and Achy Breaky Heart. Thank you for taking me back to that magic day in 1992.”
The song “Achy Breaky Heart” was named CMA Single of the Year, and the album “Some Gave All” sold over 9 million copies.
